Race to the Treasure

Discount - Save £0.96

What It Is

Can you beat the Ogre to the treasure? Players try to beat the ogre to the treasure by creating a path.

Along the way they need to collect three keys to open the treasure. Players strategize, cooperate, and build the path together.

If they do it before the ogre gets there, they all win!

Why We Love It

This game is a great way for young children to learn some skills when it comes to critical thinking. I like how at the start, you need to set up the game board using some basic map-reading skills before starting the game.

This is a fab cooperative game, as the competition is against the ogres, not other players. We played this with a group of friends and I was so impressed at how engaged they all were.

It provided the opportunity for communication, decision making and thinking things through. We found the rules easy to follow, My 4 year old picked it up very quickly with the help of his older brother, so It can be quickly taught.

It is enjoyable to play over and over again. This will be a favourite game in our house for a while.

Peppa Pig Muddy Puddles

What it is

George is on a mission. You see, he needs to hop, skip and jump over the muddy puddles in Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddles game to get to the top of the hill and reach Peppa Pig.

You have to help him watch out for the deep puddles (if he falls through one he has to start again) while he works his way across the board, helped along the way by Peppa’s friends who can boost him one, two or even three spaces ahead.

Why we love it

We got brought this as a Christmas present for my son, and it immediately grabbed his attention. It’s so bright and cheerful and screams fun from the box!

Well, I’ve lost count of the amount of times we have played it. It is simple enough for younger children to understand, but exciting enough for the family to play!

We have had so many giggles when one of us ends up down the hole! It’s a game of chance but truly exciting and fun and very appealing! (and my 8 year old enjoys it too!)

Match and Spell

Discount - Save £0.73

What it is

An spelling game with 2 ways to play. Encourage letter recognition, phonetic word building and matching pictures and words in a really fun way that helps children learn!

Why we love it

My little one really enjoyed playing with this game. It’s a super way to reinforce letter sounds and learn words.

I remember my son being super proud every time he completed a word. A bonus to this game, is that it can be played independently but it also gives the opportunity for more challenges, as you can make it more difficult to extend the learning.

It really is just a fun game in general and a great way to spend time together.

Hungry Hungry Hippos

Discount - Save £3.40

What It Is

Meet these zany friends who are ready to spring into action for the next adventure. Start a feeding frenzy and get ready for a chompin’ good time as you race to gobble up the most marbles in the pond.

Why We Love It

Because it’s an absolute classic! I LOVED playing this as a child, there is something so exciting about punching down on that hippo to gobble up all the marbles before everyone else gets there, and even now as a adult we still laugh out loud every time we play it, when that last ball gets gobbled!

This version is slightly different as you now have a golden marble, which means if that’s gobbled you are an instant winner! – totally adds to the pressure and excitement!

I also liked the clear thought that has been given to being able to store the game with a section on the bottom to keep the balls in and the hippos all coming off and slotting onto the base.

Takes seconds to take apart/put back together but means you can easily get it back in the box for safe keeping. Fab classic!

  • Reviews: Amazing Reviews . From 2,569 ratings 77% of parents give it 5 stars. Comments include “Timeless” and “Total classic”.
  • Age Range: 4-6 years
  • Players: 2-4
  • Playing Time: 10mins
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Set Up: Less than 10 minutes
  • Alternative: Mouse Trap

Toy Story 4 Home Sprint

What it is:

Play the Disney Pixar Toy Story 4 Home Sprint Board Game with Woody, Buzz Light-year, Bo peep, and Forky, be the first home to win. Some spaces leap you forward, but others can make you miss a turn; so watch out where you land on the way!

Why we love it

This game is simple and fun! It is made with excellent quality, the board is a sturdy fold out board and the playing pieces are actual models of Toy Story 4 characters- Which is super cute especially as they are nicely detailed, with interesting expressions on their faces!

I think it has excellent play value, it is very straight forward, move around the board and land on spaces with an extra turn or go back/forward, miss a turn etc. not complex in anyway so very easy for a 4 year old to pick up and learn quickly.

It’s quite a short game but that doesn’t distract from the fun element at all. It’s a fab game to play together as a family when you just want something fun to do!

Snakes and Ladders with Ludo

What It Is

Combine 2 Jaques original game creations with our reversible wooden board game of 2 in 1 Ludo and snakes and ladders.

Why We Love It

The first thing that grabbed my attention, was how this board game is packaged. It comes in the most beautifully wrapped cardboard box with tissue paper wrapping, making it the ideal gift to give or receive!

The board and pieces are all wooden, and a lot of charm and detail has gone into both the ladders and the snakes as well as the reverse Ludo side. I also find that the snake and ladders goes up to 144 squares which is rare these days, not many snakes and ladders go past 100, so you get a really good game from it!

Overall a really lovely game set to play and own!

Your mission is to take a biscuit of each type from Granny’s tray as carefully and quietly as you can. One wrong move will wake her and send her teeth flying!

Why We Love It

This is hilarious! It is recommended for 5+ but honestly, I think a 4 year old would easily enjoy this game. It’s so relatable to children, so grabs them from the get go, and will keep them engaged for a while.

It’s easy to play and understand. I loved the unexpected jolt of grandma, it always gives me a jump with a laugh.

This game is good for the little ones. Oh, and an added bonus -it doesn’t need any batteries. A game the whole family can play!

Pizza, Pizza!

What It Is

Be the first to fill your pizza board in this fun shape and colour game, but watch out for the yucky toppings that need to go in the bin.

Players spin both spinners and find the pizza slice card that matches either the shape or colour shown on one of the spinners and place it topping side up on their pizza playing board.

If the pizza slice they have turned over shows a gruesome topping the Head Chef will make them throw it away. The toppings will have children laughing as they try to avoid the spiders, worms and slugs that could ruin their pizza!

Why We Love It

This is our current favourite game. The boys think it’s absolutely hilarious If you pick up the pizza slice with a bug on it, because you have to Shout “throw it in the bin”.

It’s a very lively funny game that everyone can enjoy! The pieces are all brightly coloured, simple to put together and the rules are so easy to understand.

We have enormous fun discussing the pizza each player is making, and deciding if we like it or not, so it is great for communication and thinking skills. We also decide what pizza we might decide to actually make… worms for dinner tonight?

What Type Of Games Are Good To Play With 4 Year Olds?

Your child is at that age where peek-a-boo just doesn’t entertain them anymore but Monopoly is a challenge one step to far..

So what games do you play? Actually, when it comes to engaging, enriching things to do with a 4-year-old , there’s quite a lot.

At this age, children are likely to have a few favourite TV shows, movies and characters, so toys and games that reflect their newfound personal interests will be particularly engaging.

Games that involve using lots of imagination will be a sure hit as will toys and games that use construction.

Magnets, building blocks or Lego! Memory games, board games and puzzle/logic games are all ideal for this age too, to help support that transition to sitting at a table, concentrating and learning a new skill.

As well as learning to follow basic rules, instructions and turn taking.

Playing any game with your child will have it’s benefits.

From developing social skills, communications skills, sharing skills and motor skills, the main thing should be about spending time with each other and having fun!
