On this day, “pancake races” are held in villages and towns across the country. A famous one to note has been held since 1445 in Olney, Buckinghamshire.

The contestants, traditionally women, have to carry a frying pan, run and toss the pancake from start and finish, and wear aprons and scarves. Same rules apply for men participating, who must dress up as a housewife. These races occur throughout the country, and people dress up in all sorts of costumes.
