Steel Dragon 2000, Japan – 95 mph, 318 feet

Steel Dragon 2000

Park: Nagashima Spa Land

Location:  KuwanaMie Prefecture, Japan

Why it’s Scary: The Steel Dragon 2000 is the tallest coaster to use the traditional chain lift, and was built with a lot more steel than most roller coasters, because of potential earthquakes. With it’s great speed at 95 miles per hour, in 2003, it lost a wheel, but don’t worry, it was shut down for 3 years, until sturdier wheels were installed!

Park: Dreamland

Location: Queensland, Australia

Why it’s Scary: The coaster electro-magnetically accelerates to 100.0 mph in just under seven seconds along the extended 676 ft launch tunnel, rises up its L-shaped track, then at the top the coaster stops, and drops back down, again at 100 mph. Riders are weightless during the entire vertical section of the ride for about 6.5 seconds total!

The Smiler

Park: Alton Towers

Location: Staffordshire, England

Why it’s Scary: Don’t let the speed fool or height fool you, The Smiler has the most inversions of all steel coaster, 14 to be exact. The highlight of this ride is the element – a  large spider-like structure “The Marmaliser” – located at the center of the ride, it has “mind manipulating” elements, to “enhance” the stomach churning experience.

Top Thrill Dragster, USA – 120 mph, 420 feet

Top Thrill Dragster

photo source: Matt Huff on Flickr

Park: Cedar Point

Location:  Sandusky, Ohio, United States

Why it’s Scary: The Top Thrill Dragster was the first strata coaster made, and set the stage for Kingda Ka. The experience on it is much like Kingda Ka, it is tall and it is scary. Note, that sometimes, depending on the weather and other factors, the cart may not make it to the loop, causing the special magnetic system to take you back down, and relaunch you, on an extremely rare occasion, you may get stuck at the top of the tall loop, and have to wait for the mechanic to come up and give the ride a “nudge” in to the terrifying drop back down!

Takabisha, Japan – 62 mph, 141 Feet

Park: Fuji-Q Highland

Location:  FujiyoshidaYamanashiJapan

Why it’s Scary: Does a 121 degree angle sound scary? We think so! The whole ride is two minutes long, but with a 180 degree turn, a banana roll, corkscrew and then two airtime hills, and more this coaster has what an adrenaline junkie needs! The Takabisha is the steepest roller coaster in the world, and the park itself has 14 record setting coasters, just in case this ride was not enough!

Formula Rossa, UAE – 150 mph, 174 feet

Formula Rossa

Park: Ferrari World

Location:  Abu DhabiUnited Arab Emirates

Why it’s Scary:  Formula Rossa surpassed Kingda Ka, when it set the record of world’s fastest roller coaster in 2010. The coaster was inspired by  the legendary Italian racetrack, Autodromo Nazionale Monza. It is of no surprise that the coaster reaches its record top speed in just 5 seconds! Because of such high speeds, and the potentiality of debris (including insects) to get in to the riders’ eyes, everyone is required to wear special protective glasses!

El Toro, USA – 72 mph, 181 feet

El Toro

photo source: Jordan Coleman on Flickr

Park: Six Flags Great Adventure

Location: Jackson, New Jersey, United States

Why it’s Scary: The coaster rides as smooth as steel due to the way the track were made. Unlike traditional wooden coaster, which were done on site, and required a lot of man power and labour, El Toro’s tracks were laser cut in a factory. As a result, the track is manufactured to a higher degree of precision versus the hand made ones. It is the fastest wooden coaster in the world, and looks very impressive!

Goliath, USA – 72 mph, 165 feet

Goliath

Park: Six Flags Great America

Location: Gurnee, Illinois, United States

Why it’s Scary: The ride, once completed, sometime Summer 2014, Goliath aims to gain three world records for wooden roller coasters; it will feature the longest drop (180 feet), the steepest drop (85 degrees), and the fastest speed! The schematic above looks very promising and extremely scary, there’s something about wooden coasters, the creaking and clanking, that will  make your bones crawl!
