Quick Yes/No Answers: British Tourists And Europe

eu changes tourist brexit

In the aftermath of the UK’s referendum on EU membership, some are unclear about the immediate future.

How will the decision impact your plans to travel in Europe this year and beyond?

Below are the most common questions – and some straight yes/no answers.

All answers are based on research from reputable sources (see list below).

1 Do I need a new passport?

No, not right now. Eventually new ones will be issued.

2. Will my EHIC card still work?

Yes. It will continue to work until such time as we have officially left the EU, a process that will take time and negotiation. Check out our EHIC guide.

3. Will I need a visa to travel to EU countries?

No. And even once we’ve officially left the EU, that prospect is unlikely.

4. Will I need more spending money?

Yes, probably. The Pound is weakening (at time of writing) which means your money won’t go so far.

5. Will the cost of holidays go up?

Yes, probably. Experts predict the Pound weakening, and increased fuel costs, will in turn will lead to higher holiday prices.

6. Will I still be able to fly with Ryanair and Easyjet?

Yes for now. Whether low cost airlines will be able to survive depends largely on whether the UK negotiates to remain part of the European Economic Union, something we won’t know for a few months yet.

7. Will I be able to claim flight delay compensation?

Yes, until we are officially out of the EU. And even then, the UK may impose similar laws that protect the consumer. Check out our flight delay compensation guide.

8. Will roaming charges go up?

No. Not until we are out of the EU officially. And maybe not even then, depending on how phone companies choose to react.

9. Can I go and live in Spain, France or elsewhere in Europe?

Yes and no. It’s likely permanent residency will only be allowed if you have lived in these countries for some time already. So you can go now, but you may not be allowed to stay.

10. Can I still go on booze runs to Europe?

Yes, until we are officially out. Once we’re out of the EU, it’s likely the old restrictions will apply.

11. Will I still be able to buy a holiday home abroad in Europe?

Yes. But the Telegraph predicts the costs will go up, with higher taxes imposed.
