What To Consider When Buying A Garden Storage Box
Before buying a garden storage box it’s essential you have a think over your needs and what features you require. These include the following:
Capacity
Have a good think about what you would like to store in your garden storage box. This will give you a good idea on what sort of capacity (litres) you may require. You can then see what the options are for the other criteria such as dimensions, design, features and of course, budget.
Dimensions
Depending on what you are looking to store will determine the best dimensions you need.
Weight
Are you going to be wanting to move the storage box around? If so, you don’t want it to be too heavy, which is a benefit of the plastic ones. On the other hand, if there are high winds you don’t want it to be too light!
Design
There are many designs to choose from rattan/wicker through to decorative wood panel effects and more simple, anthracite looks.
Some are also designed to be suitable for both outdoors and indoors.
Durability
Your garden storage box should be able to withstand the elements over many years. Ensure it is waterproof, durable and composed from maintenance fade-free plastic. It should also have good ventilation to ensure the contents do not take on moisture.
Features
Many of these will depend on your needs and personal preference.
- Security. Many have a lockable bolt option. Some also have a secondary ‘step on lock’ for added security.
- Opening mechanism. Some storage boxes have lids that are piston operated. These make them super easy to open, needing only one hand.
- Bin Opening Kit. If you are looking for a large garden storage box to keep your wheelie bins this can be a useful feature. This includes fittings so that when you open the lid of your storage boxes, they also open the lids of the bins below. These storage boxes (or small shed) can also have a double door at the front to easily wheel in and out your bins via a handy sloped ramp.
- Seating. Certain boxes can also double up as seats. Some perform this better than others and comfort levels vary. You can always add a cushion! Do check the weight capacity.
- Handles. Want to be able to move your storage box around? Look out for those that have handles that make this so much easier.
