Benefits of a Plastic Shed

Over years the popularity of plastic sheds, versus metal and wood ones, have increased greatly.

Maintenance-Free

Compared to other sheds, plastic sheds require very little or no maintenance.

This is usually the top reason why consumers go for plastic ones.

Metal and wooden sheds are prone to a mix of corrosion, rot and warping.

You don’t even need to paint them like wooden alternatives to protect from pest, rust, and extreme weather conditions.

All you need to do is simply wash them with a domestic pressure washer.

Extremely Durable

In the early days of plastic sheds they were made from whatever PVC technologies were available at the time.

Over time plastics have improved greatly and combined with a number of big brands entering the fray (including Keter, Duramax, Lifetime and others) most plastic sheds are now constructed from advanced polypropylene.

Simple Set Up

Putting together a plastic shed does not require any specialist building knowledge or tools.

This is not the case with many wooden sheds.

In contrast plastic sheds come in parts that are easy to put together. Some use screws and fasteners, others simply snap into place.

And as they are much lighter than metal or wood they require less manpower to put together.

Portability

Due to their lightness of materials and simple construction, plastic sheds can be disassembled easily and quickly and moved into another location. Try doing this with a wooden shed!

Cost

As well as the maintenance costs (and time) being lower, the purchase price of plastic sheds is much lower than wooden or metal alternatives.

Design Choices

Due to the more flexible construction properties of plastic there are more options for designs.

  • If you have peculiar shaped areas you can often find plastic designed dimensions to fit.
  • Many modular units are also available that can be added to over time.
  • Design features like windows, gutters and skylights are possible.

Functionality

Plastic sheds are more water and weatherproof and because they do not hold heat in as much they can also offer functions as kids play areas or even offices.

Or you can use them to store plant food and fertiliser in the summer and spring or even plants during the colder winter months.

Disadvantages Of a Plastic Shed

Here are some of the drawbacks of plastic sheds. These don’t necessarily apply to all of them and some will be less of an issue for many.

Security

This is one of the biggest concerns. You should think about how much force is needed to break in. Many brands do combat these successfully and you can lessen any risk by going for a reputable brand.

Strength

Again, this applies to cheaper or much smaller plastic sheds but you should be aware that some plastic sheds do suffer from poor wind protection.

Any shed, including plastic ones, should also be anchored to the ground depending on their exposure to high winds.

Extreme Temperatures

Some plastic sheds are susceptible to extreme temperatures. Many brands are getting much better with this.

Common Plastic Shed FAQs

Why are plastic sheds so popular?

For lots of reasons but generally a mix of cost, durability, portability, functionality and many more factors.

Do plastic sheds need a base?

Whether you are building a plastic shed from panels, or a metal or wood one, it needs to be sitting on a level surface if you want all the panels to fit correctly.

It wouldn’t be a good idea to simply use level ground as you’ll have problems with moisture and rodents. You may well also find that the shed will sink unevenly into the ground making it difficult to use.

What are PVC and HDPE?

They are man made plastics used in the composition of plastic sheds and stand for Polyvinyl Chloride and High-Density Polyethylene.
